Mount Mercy University Online

At Mount Mercy University, we offer students of all backgrounds a fulfilling education and solid preparation for a changing world and workforce. We serve nearly 1,900 students at our campus in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and now, with our online degree programs, we can serve thousands more. And no matter how you access our coursework, we deliver top-notch academic instruction that is always based on our five critical concerns: caring for the earth, immigration, nonviolence, racism, and women.

Mount Mercy’s online degree programs go beyond the time you spend in front of a computer. Online classes still allow you to get involved with research and participate in internships with local and global companies and organizations.

We launched our fully online degree programs in 2014 so that students everywhere could receive the same high-quality education as our on-campus students without sacrificing career or family obligations.

Founded in 1928 with the purpose of uniting people with opportunity through high quality, values-based education, Mount Mercy University has a rich foundation upon which we’ve built our on-campus and online degree program options.

We’ve grown from a junior college to a four-year university and today, Mount Mercy University is pleased to offer our online academic programs to an even bigger population of learners in the same spirit of our founders.

Education is about more than textbooks and exams. A true education prepares you for any workplace and addresses the whole person. Mount Mercy University was founded as a Catholic university, built on the Sisters of Mercy’s five critical concerns, and we continue to uphold that mission in our online courses just as much as we do with our traditional on-campus programs.

Mount Mercy University strives to live up to the highest standards of Catholic intellectual tradition, promoting the core values of truth, respect, responsibility, excellence, and service, and welcoming all people of all backgrounds.

We are a proud supporter of our sponsors, the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, through the Conference for Mercy Higher Education. As a Mercy institution, we respectfully abide by their statement on Catholic Identity and Mercy Charism.

Mount Mercy students come from a wide variety of diverse geographic, ethnic and economic backgrounds. They are confident, caring, quick to lend a hand, happy with who they are, and excited about where they’re going. Most importantly, Mount Mercy students are eager to realize their full potential.

Mount Mercy University is ranked Iowa’s best college on MONEY magazine’s “2017 Best Colleges” list. But the best way to judge a degree program is by looking at the outcomes of the students who enroll:

  • 66% of MMU students have internships or other career-related experiences by the time they graduate.
  • 96% of MMU students are employed or in graduate school within nine months of graduation.

Mount Mercy students donate more than 15,000 hours of community service each year. We provide service and volunteer opportunities for all students.

Mount Mercy is a Catholic University which provides student-focused education in the spirit of the Sisters of Mercy and welcomes people of all beliefs to join our community in pursuit of baccalaureate and graduate education and compassionate service to those in need.

We strive for excellence in accomplishing our mission through four interdependent goals:

  • Using Reflective Judgment. The ability to think clearly and carefully, argue coherently, and evaluate competing for truth claims critically are fundamental to a college education. Reflective judgment requires a knowledge of the basic fact, examination, and evaluation of assumptions; adequate justification for drawing a conclusion; and understanding implications of drawing that conclusion. With these skills, individuals can solve problems creatively and integrate knowledge across disciplines.
  • Engaging in Strategic Communication. Strategic communication requires selecting from a range of options in order to accomplish a chosen goal in an ethical manner. These options include construction and interpretation of messages in written, oral, and aesthetic forms using appropriate technology.
  • Serving the Common Good. The common good is at the heart of Catholic social teaching. Because persons are social by nature, every individual’s good relates necessarily to the common good, the sum of social conditions that allow all people to reach their human potential more fully. It includes respect for, and ethical interaction with, every person and the natural environment and, in the spirit of the Sisters of Mercy, service for the wellbeing of all humanity and action in the cause of justice in the world.
  • Promoting Purposeful Living. A liberal education enables persons to achieve a greater degree of freedom upon which to act purposefully. Since the development of purpose entails planning for life based on a set of priorities, Mount Mercy University provides opportunities for spiritual growth, intellectual engagement, vocational clarity, social development, physical well-being, emotional maturity, and responsible community leadership.

As members of the Mount Mercy University community, grounded in the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy and our Catholic identity, we are committed to:

  • Lifelong learning and education of the whole person
We believe that education is a lifelong experience where learning empowers the whole person, intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, and physically.
  • Pursuit of truth and dignity
We foster free inquiry in a compassionate culture where our dedication to faith, truth, and Mercy supports the dignity of each person within the human community.
  • Commitment to students
We acknowledge and affirm that our students’ needs are central to decisions that affect community life.
  • Justice
We advocate for equality by actively creating just and healthy relationships in our learning community and in our global society.
  • Gratitude
We celebrate with humility all gifts and talents bestowed by God and faithfully share these blessings with the wider community.
  • Hospitality
We accomplish our work in the spirit of Catherine McAuley’s graciousness and inclusion that welcomes all people and perspectives.
  • Service
We instill a sense of responsibility and caring that calls us to serve the common good.
