Program Description


Acquires knowledge of space design from a transdisciplinary perspective

This program is aimed at Develop leadership skills and design of urban spaces. The program places particular emphasis on sustainability And to build a transdisciplinary vision that will allow a Global and ecological knowledge of the built environment.

From a multi-level perspective that involves learning at different scales, the program is aimed at professionals who are specifically involved in the processes of creating public spaces and urban areas.

It's about the First Master's degree that incorporates the advanced studies linked to the Sciences of the Complexity. A science that promotes a new approach to reality and provides us with new tools for the design of cities.

Much of the contents of the program are oriented to know the evolution of the urban form and the complex social, economic and technological processes that in their irrepressible dynamics continuously form and reform our cities.

The development of the project is an important element in the Master's Degree, since in this process the set of acquired knowledge is synthesized. In this sense, students will develop their ability to analyze complex contexts, set goals and develop strategies for the development of Healthy spaces and with a high and varied quality of life.

Today, more than ever, Urban Space Design is a collective task, so every designer must know the broad interdisciplinary context in which the project is developed. In this sense, good organization and management of the project is essential.


The main objectives of this program are:

  • Acquire a knowledge of the design of the space constructed from a transdisciplinary perspective; That is, from a connected perspective capable of reconstructing an overall vision that surpasses the fragmentation of knowledge of our modern hyper-specialized society.
  • To know the last advances in the matter of design from the ecological approach that offers of the theory of the complexity.
  • Understand the urban space as a process, which involves developing designs in which strategic thinking is beyond strategic planning.
  • Provide the necessary theoretical and practical tools for the development and execution of a good project.
  • To know the strategies and foundations of the most outstanding international projects of the last years.
  • To contribute knowledge and know-how through the study and the realization of exercises that will allow the student to consolidate and put into practice the knowledge acquired.
  • Develop critical thinking of the student through the provision of conceptual tools that allow him to become empowered and become a self-critical and self-reflective designer.
  • To know the new models of management and organization of the project specifically linked to this global emergency that we call society network.


The Master in Design of Urban, Architectural and Mobility Spaces is structured from the following thematic areas that are integrated in a transversal project that develops in 10 subjects:

A Theory of Built Space

We will construct arguments and establish project objectives from a transdisciplinary positioning. This involves understanding the design from a multidimensional perspective (social, economic, cultural, environmental, ...) Through the theory of complexity we will try to construct a complex view of the design of the built space and to make known the scientific studies that Will allow us to develop designs more adapted to our needs.

Urban Analysis and Representation Techniques

The historical, economic and social analysis of the urban space is an essential prerequisite for facing any good project. We will know the tools of urban analysis and the systems of representation more pertinent and effective.

Of nodes and connectors: the street and the square

The form of an urban space is the possibility of its functional structure. In its specific development, topographic, hydrological, environmental, economic and social aspects are involved. The street and the square are the paradigm of urban public space. We will analyze the set of implications that we must consider in its design.

Parks and Playgrounds

If parks are the lungs of a city, playgrounds are your promise of the future. Children also have the right to the city. From an ecological perspective we will study formulas to make cities greener, healthier and more convivial.

Post-Industrial Spaces and Waterfronts

In the post-Ford era many of the industrial city's production spaces have become obsolete and abandoned. These spaces have become great opportunities for the regeneration of the city. Maritime fronts are often a particular case of this dynamic. Analysis of international projects that have turned into place what were previously non-locations.

Design and Construction of Urban Elements

The design has to do with the corporal and the sensitive, because through our works, the designers propose a way to "touch" the world. We will know the materials, the problems of design and construction and the different systems of manufacture, for the detailed development of our project.

Intelligence and Efficiency: the paradigm of Smart City

To achieve an efficient design, the urban needs to be thought strategically and from an (eco) logical perspective. New technologies such as Big Data enable monitoring and processes of active regulation of the city (digital cities). This revolution has only just begun ...

Mobility and Accessibility

The urban space constitutes a probabilistic network of intersubjective relations. The evolution of means of transport implies that every urban project must take into account the mobility problems that are generated in this network (accessibility, risk prevention, vehicle-pedestrian interaction). How can we integrate passive systems and modern active control systems (Smart City and Big Data) into the design of our project?

Resilience and Sustainability

For some years, sustainability has become a fundamental element in the design of urban space. In parallel, resilience is the ability to withstand and overcome environmental disasters and disruptions. As biology teaches us, all good design has to be adaptive (and, to be able to be, intelligent) and therefore has to take into consideration the problem of uncertainty.

Build the Projected

Urban space is not the sole responsibility of a single person, it is a collective project that should aspire to build more inclusive cities. Decentralized decision-making systems such as Peer to Peer (P2P) are increasingly gaining ground in the network society.

Final Master's Work

Tutorial elaboration of a final master's project in which the student has to synthesize the knowledge acquired in the different subjects previously taught. The theme of the project will be different in each edition of the Master's and will consist of writing an integral project with a previously defined theme. The student must demonstrate that he has acquired a work methodology to develop the project in all its phases.

In cases where the student proves previous higher education to a process of accreditation of university degree, the Academic Committee will evaluate the candidate's CV and portfolio and completed the curriculum, which must maintain a reasonable equivalence with existing studies degree the same area.


People who pass the program evaluation will obtain a double degree: Course at ESdesign - Superior School of Design Barcelona Course at the International University of Valencia, who credited them as professionals in the specialty studied.
